Thanks for the suggestion.  I was using the 'make' method because I need to ensure that my mx.Base and iODBC libraries, which are installed in non-standard locations, are used instead of the .  Do I simply edit the mxCOMMERCIAL.py file to indicate the nonstandard library & header locations?  I'll go ahead and give that a try in any case.
